Few things are more rewarding than camping in the backcountry with family and friends when the warmer weather arrives. I took advantage of the winter weather conditions to start my research of roof top tents that would fit the Garvin Industries’ Expedition Rack.

Being satisfied with other Smittybilt products, I looked at their Overlander tents. They are constructed from heavy-duty rip-stop polyester. They are waterproof with polyurethane impregnated on top for the ultimate in durability. They include hinged anodized aluminum tent poles, along with stainless steel hinges. The aluminum telescoping ladder extends up to 6 1/2 ft. I would also need the optional ladder extension to account for the extra suspension lift.

The tent is easy to set up by one person, because it will fold out in seconds to full height so you don’t have to mess around with tent pegs and ropes like normal ground tents. The tent bracket would fit the Garvin Industries’ Expedition Rack. The tent includes a 2 in. thick high-density foam mattress with removable cover, waterproof rainfly, and mosquito screens.

I ordered the Smittybilt Overlander Roof Top Tent #2783 and ladder extension.

From start to finish, removing the heavy duty dust cover, unstrapping the tie downs, extending the ladder, and unfolding the tent – takes less than 5 minutes, then opening the window flaps and installing the spring metal poles – takes a couple of minutes. My usual setup time is always under ten minutes.
