We gently woke to the sound of light rain. Water running from the gutters and tinkling on the Walmart parking lot. Warm and cozy in bed, reluctant to leave its warm embrace.

Suddenly, I sat bolt upright in bed, the peace and quiet was shattered at 6:00am by road construction. The cacophony of screeching metal on metal and incessant beeping from a moving excavator. Chunks of concrete falling into the bed of a dump truck like thunder, workers shouting to communicate above their own racket.

After a hearty breakfast of fried eggs and PEI potatoes, we continued our repositioning drive under low clouds.

As usual, we turned off the highway, and took the roads less traveled…and now we know why they are less travelled. We had 22 kilometres of rocking and heaving on roads long past their best before date. Anyone with a weak stomach would throw up their breakfast.

Halfway through this stretch, I came across a street name that is worth honourable mention. I pulled over and had to take a photo to share with you. Anyone who makes it this far down this rough road is “dunwanderin”. I guess that’s why a small community sprung up in the area.

The pavement ended and the dirt road began. No surprise, the dirt road was in much better condition than the pavement.

The dirt ended, and new pavement took its place. We returned to the highway, and arrived early at Adventures East Campground. We set up camp, taking advantage of some internet time for blogging and Susan’s work. It was time to whet the whistle, so we headed down the road to Big Spruce Brewing and sampled a flat of craft beers, while sitting in a screened porch overlooking Bras d’Or Lake

We returned to camp after a few more beers. Feeling very relaxed, we had a light supper, and called it a night. We were ready and excited to explore the Cabot Trail in the morning.
